Beddings are sheets placed on your bed to make sleep more comfortable. It primarily keeps us warm while we sleep. There are different types of bedding fabrics used. Some have more advanced designs that also help in proper ventilation, so that air flows smoothly and promotes sleep better. It depends on the fabric to achieve a certain effect.
Cotton is one of the most common materials used. It comes from a shrub natively grown in subtropical to tropical region around the world. The fiber is harvested and spun into yarns or threads. Then, it is woven into cloth, making the end product a kind of soft and breathable textile.
Another kind of material commonly used for beddings is a soft woven fabric called flannel. It is more loosely woven compared to cotton and was originally made from worsted yarn or carded wool. However nowadays, manufacturers use a mixture of wool and cotton or synthetic fiber and some wool.
Cotton and flannel are very suitable for the warm weather. Meanwhile, down feathers materials are used for colder weather. It has thermal properties for greater protection against cold temperatures.
Imagine a baby bird that just hatched out of its shell. They are covered in a layer of smooth feathers. This is the material that downs are made of. This soft material is most commonly used as insulators in beddings, jackets, pillows and sleeping bags.
A special kind of down found only in selected species of birds is called the powder down. These are extraordinarily fine with a bit of dust in between. However, although it is known as an ideal material in making outdoor camping material, it is quite expensive in as much as down feathers are difficult to obtain.
Polyester is another popular material used as bed spreads. It is more formally known as polyethylene teraphthalate. It is known to be slow in absorbing water, and has high tenacity and E-modulus. It is also characterized by relatively minimal shrinkage compared to other industrial fibers.
Satin is also a kind of cloth characterized by a glossy surface and dull back. This kind of fabric is made using the satin weave that involves the use of a mixture of nylon, silk or polyester. A variation of the material that uses cotton and other short-staple yarns are called "sateen."
Silk is one of the more expensive fabrics. It is a fiber made from natural protein and woven into textiles. The raw material is collected from the cocoons of the mulberry silkworm larvae bred in captivity. The fibers' triangular prism-like structure causes the glossy shimmering look that makes silk one of the textile world's most prized materials.
Wool is also used in making beddings. It is a fiber made from the follicles of animals in the Caprinae family, the most common of which are sheep. The crimp and scaling properties of this material make it easier to spin into yarn. This characteristic also makes it bulkier than the other textiles. It is a popular choice for beddings because the insulation capabilities of wool work both ways; it keeps the heat in and prevents it from breathing out.
Wool is generally creamy white in color. However, some breeds of sheep are able to produce mixtures of black, silver and brown. Wool fibers are also hygroscopic. It can readily absorb moisture up to nearly one-third of its weight but it can also give off moisture.
